If you’re a parent looking to take their kids on an adventure, there are few better places than the Maltese islands. This group of islands in the Mediterranean Sea has long been known as a beachside destination, but you’ll soon learn that there is so much more to these islands. Here are just a few of the adventure activities you can take the kids on once your flight has touched down in Malta.
Mediterraneo Marine Park
For a more visual approach to the marine life around Malta, there is the Mediterraneo Marine Park. In a picturesque location, offset by the Mediterranean Sea, the park boasts dolphins, sea lions, tortoises, and other native animals. It’s a pleasant way to spend a day learning and interacting with the local marine life.
View the Azure Window
The Azure Window is a huge natural arch in the sea cliffs, a standout view in a land full of them. In front of it is another geological quagmire, the Blue Hole. It’s a vertical chimney in the limestone, about 10m in diameter and 25m deep, which connects with the sea through an underwater arch below. You can take the kids snorkeling or even diving, and see some amazing scenes and marine life.
Valletta
The capital city of Malta, what Valletta likes in size it makes up for in sheer beauty. Measuring at just 600m by 1000m, this diminutive city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which described it as “one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world”. There are plenty of activities to choose from, whether it be walking through the impressive Grand Master’s Palace, or relaxing where knights used to relax in the Upper Barrakka Gardens and Saluting Battery. Even a family tour through the city center is bound to fill each individual with wonder, gaping at what can be accomplished through human ingenuity. If you’re lucky, you may even catch the carnival.
Ta’Qali National Park
In the center of Malta lies Ta’Qali, a wide open space where you can find the Ta’Qali National Park, the National Stadium, as well as a large market — a trip just isn’t complete until the kids find some neat trinkets and souvenirs to show off to their friends. You can buy ceramics, jewelry, blown glass, and other unique items to take home. Afterwards, it’s a perfect place to spend an afternoon picnicking and enjoying the day.
Malta seems to be built for adventurous families to explore its crooks and crevices. The only question is, what memory will you be making there?
