Have you ever been surprised by a city you thought you knew? Houston surprised me in a number of ways, but the biggest surprise (other than the fact that the weather was not horribly humid, but pleasant) was the urban feel of the city. I realize that sound pretty naïve, considering that Houston is the largest city in Texas and one of the 10 biggest cities in the U.S., but I had just never had explored the city close enough.
It turns out,the metropolitan vibe is one of the best parts of the city. Along with the urban trappings come the many features that make big cities family friendly and exciting to explore. One of my favorite things about big cities is their take on the city park. In the suburbs, a park is a slide, a swing and some picnic tables-definitely nothing to write home about. In the city, with green space at a premium, parks make every effort to pack as much punch as possible into the available space. The result is a area that can serve as much more than just a run of the mill park, but a full family attraction.
Discovery Green in the heart of Houston is just such a place. Tree shaded walks surround a picturesque pond in this 12 acre park that offers postcard ready views of the downtown skyline. Interactive exhibits and active programming make this a perfect place to play.
KinderLake
Encompassing one acre of the park, the lake is home to water garden features and a flotilla of remote control boats ready for pilots of all ages. The winter transforms the lake into magical outdoor ice skating arena. Plenty of seating is available around the lake if you just want to sit back and enjoy the views.
The John P McGovern Children’s Playground
Built into the side of a hill to provide shade and protection from the streets, this playground is built around the theme of Houston’s migrating birds, and signs along the path ensure that you learn a thing or two while you play.
Game Carts
Rentable golf carts, decorated by local Art Cart artists, are stocked with the supplies to turn Discovery Green into your own game center. Choose from bocce ball, horseshoes, or croquet and challenge your family to see who is king of the court.
Dining Options
The Lake House offers casual family dining, with plenty of outdoor seating around Kinderlake. Typical counter service fare is available, including reasonably priced burgers, corn dogs, and chicken fingers. Plenty of desserts are also available. For a fun treat, take your food out for a picnic on the lawn. For more upscale dining, check out the views from the all glass enclosure of The Grove.
Gateway Fountain
The Gateway Fountain not only provides a visual gateway to the park, it also teases young visitors to stay out and stay dry. Most visitors can’t resist taking a run through the spraying fountains, and many come outfitted in full swimwear for the fun.
Public Art
Discovery Green is home to several works of art that are both inspirational and interactive. Jean Dubuffet’s Monument Au Fantome makes its playful home in the park and invites kids to climb under the sculpture while exploring the quirky angles at play against the green grass and blue sky.
