If you don’t know this about me already, you need to know. I am addicted to Roadside America. Where ever we go, even before I check for hotels or look up a map, I scour the internet for any kind of weird roadside attraction that defies human understanding that might be found along the way. I’ve even been known to build entire trips around the kind of kitschy garbage that many travelers wouldn’t give a second glance. Call it a sickness, if you want, but it’s my sickness and I like it.
Recently we traveled to Paris, TX where the tourism relies heavily on the cheese factor. Naturally, we checked out the cowboy hat adorned Eiffel Tower, but I knew that there had to be more. Sure enough, a giant Campbell’s soup can was reported outside of town. The can was a huge disappointment at only about six feet high. As a part of the Campbell’s soup sign, it was really only half a can and earned a round of boos from our crowd.
We redeemed our giant soup can hunt in Eastland, TX. And this one was big. A part of the Eastland Outdoor Art exhibit, the can was a great tribute to Andy Warhol and an excellent specimen to add to our list of roadside wacky weirdness.
My attempt at a Warhol tribute. Look out! I have photo editing software and I kinda know how to use it.

ha ha ha ha ha!!! I thought I was the only one who did this! I make my husband do stuff like this all the time. Last time we were in MA, we visited the giant seahorse in Mattapoisett: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/565

Love the giant soup cans! Too funny. And, regarding Jennifer’s comment about the giant seahorse in Mattapoisett – I live not to far from that town & didn’t know a giant seahorse existed. We’ll be checking that out soon!

That looks great! I would take a detour to see that too! The only weird roadside attraction I’ve seen is the giant peach in Gaffney, North Carolina. This looks like a lot more fun!

I love a good giant roadside attraction. Although yes that soup looks pretty disappointing. We recently drove around the east coast of Australia and I made sure we saw all the important oversized roadside attractions. The giant prawn, the giant clam, the big merino sheep, the disappointingly small Dog on the tuckerbox … I don’t think it’s a sickness! It’s just something you have to do on a family road trip!

I love cheesy tourist attractions like this! We recently made a special stop in West Virginia on the way home from Pittsburgh so we could stop by the “World’s Largest Teapot” and pick up a geocache there (yup, the story will go up at my blog in the next couple of weeks).
I’m glad you found the BIG soup can 🙂

Dominique; I need that teapot photo!!

My daughter built a scale model of a Campbell soup can last year for a math class assignment. It was 3 feet tall. She and I read your post together today and giggled.

We are kindred souls! That soup can photo? That would be my choice for a holiday card photo!! Last year, our Christmas card photo was the four of us standing in front of the world’s largest garden gnome in NY! http://gobigorgohomeblog.com/700

I used to take a lot of weekend roadtrips and roadside art keeps the driving from being so hum-drum. The kind of roadside art I’ve seen…well, it’s like you landed in a Dr. Seuss’ story book sometimes.
