Colonial Willamsburg is a living history museum that allows visitors to take a step back in time to the glorious colonial era of America. But before you can successfully take a step back, you must look ahead. Planning a successful trip to this city is all done before you ever buy your tickets.
1.Plan ahead. This is not the kind of attraction you can go into without a plan and expect to get the best experience. Pre-planning is a must. If you are in town early, you can stop by the Visitor’s Center and pick up a schedule of events called “This Week”, or you can just check the website for scheduling. Grab your highlighter and take a few minutes to plan out your day.
2. Call ahead. Not surprisingly, Colonial Williamsburg is a popular field trip site, but in my experience that is the one thing that will ruin your otherwise picturesque trip back in time. Be aware that most schools schedule field trips on Fridays in the spring and fall, but you can always call ahead to ensure that the park will not be overrun with school groups.
3. Book ahead. Many of the more popular programs and restaurants will book in advance. If you have your heart set on taking a ghost tour, or eating at a certain tavern, plan to make those reservations before you arrive.
4. Multiple days ahead. There is a lot of history (and a lot of ground) to cover at Colonial Williamsburg, and for just an extra $4 per adult and $2 per child, you can purchase a multi-day ticket that will admit you for three consecutive days. A little bit of history and a slower pace allows the days to be much more enjoyable.
5.Fun ahead. Being prepared means you will be able to enjoy the best of Colonial Williamsburg, but there is plenty to do while you wait for your trip: Check out some books and movies from the library to familiarize yourself with the time period. Also, spend some time studying the map, so that you will be ready to see all the city has to offer.
